Diane Brennan
Brennan
wants to see a more balanced approach to decision-making
on Nanaimo City Council. She has set out five clear
goals that will guide her campaign.
They are:
1) to encourage an open, collaborative leadership style.
2) to focus on long-term sustainability in economic and social development decisions.
3) to celebrate and build on Nanaimo's rich ethnic and cultural diversity.
4) to recognize that healthy social and economic development go hand-in-hand.
5) to work with community groups to protect our natural environment.
"I am running for mayor because it is time for a fresh approach to leadership for our city; one that is strongly grounded in electoral and community experience," said Brennan. "I have been a school trustee, and, for the past six years, a city councillor. Since 2005 I have been one of seven city appointees to the Regional District of Nanaimo. I know and love this community and I am prepared to bring fresh energy and ideas to the job of mayor."

and five term incumbent Mayor of
Nanaimo, announced today his
intention to seek voter support
to continue the duties and
responsibilities of the Office
of Mayor. "I have consulted my
family, friends, supporters, and
associates. Their positive
encouragement and support over
the years has been key to my
ability to carry out my duties
effectively. With their ongoing

initiative to the voters of
Nanaimo for Mayor."
I have been humbled by the wide
& diverse encouragement to seek

course, my mom.
"I am fortunate, and honoured,
that you, the voters, have given
me the opportunity and
responsibility of serving all the

John Rattan
John
Rattan announced that he will attempt another run for
Mayor of Nanaimo in the upcoming Nanaimo municipal
elections. John Rattan was recently named "2008
Citizen of the Year" during the Sterling Awards
sponsored by the Nanaimo Chamber of Commerce.
"I am very keen to be the next Mayor
of Nanaimo and I am asking for the support of Nanaimo
citizens in my decision to run," said Ruttan.
"I have long felt that Nanaimo is in
need of a fresh new approach to leadership on city
council," he said. "A city with the complex issues and
challenges that Nanaimo faces must have strong
leadership from a Mayor and council that are decision
oriented and community focused."
Currently Vice President and Past President of Tourism
Nanaimo, Ruttan is also a long serving member of the
Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Society, a Director on the Nanaimo
Museum Board, Past Chair of Nanaimo Port Authority,
former Federal Government Appointee to the Nanaimo
Harbour Commission, Chair of the "Support YCD Committee"
(a group supporting the Nanaimo Airport runway
improvements), Chair of the Community Policing Advisory
Board, and a former member of several service clubs such
as Rotary and Jaycees, and the Nanaimo Flying Club.
Larry Iwaskow
“Common
sense, Courtesy and Respect, that is how I stand on all
issues. That is what I bring to civic politics in
Nanaimo”
I have lived in Nanaimo for 40 of my 53 years. I have
worked as a glazer (I.B.P.A.T) for over 30 years. I have
also worked as a care-aid (H.E.U.), green chain (I.W.A.)
first-aid attendant, pizza cook and fish processor. I
reside on Protection Island with my lovely wife Ruth.
My community activity in Nanaimo goes back to 1968 with
the “City Plan” as a member of the Committee for the
Advancement of Youth. At the same time I volunteered at
the crisis center. I have been a member of the Lions
Club, Newcastle Island Steering Committee, Plan Nanaimo
Steering Committee, Nanaimo Traffic Safety Committee,
Nanaimo Volunteer Firefighter Association, and
Protection Island Ratepayers Association.
My knowledge and understanding of Nanaimo comes from my
experiences as a working family man. I offer you
straight talk, common sense, and a commitment to
responsible financial behavior, based on a practical
knowledge of Nanaimo. I wish to serve the people of
Nanaimo. I want to energize the existing system with new
hope… I want to promote and build a walkable, cyclable
trail from Dodd’s Narrows to Lantzville connecting
people to ferries, planes and parks to regional transit.
Propose and designate 15% of all rezoning DCC’s to
affordable housing. Establish an environmentally viable
maintainable garbage solution and site. Resolve the
downtown parking problem. I have the Perfect Parking
Plan. Acceptable business and trade practices and
standards may be good enough for some. I prefer the
benchmark to be excellence in all my endeavors.
